Frequently Asked Questions

  • Working with an editor tends to be a single transaction: You make your manuscript as good as you can, and the editor gives you all the feedback at once. And then you’re on your own to implement it.

    As a book coach, I work with my clients every step of the way. You don’t have to wait until you have a completed manuscript to get feedback. One of my favorite things to do is give feedback on an outline. Or a help a writer who’s stuck in the middle of a draft.

    If you are coming to me with a completed manuscript, I might give similar feedback to a developmental editor, but then we’ll get on a call and dig into how to resolve the most critical items.

  • Yes. I coach writers of any genre if there’s a heavy romance subplot.

    I also coach fantasy, lit-RPG, and cozy mystery — even without the romance.

  • As long as I’m rooting for the couple to get together in the end, I’m all in!

    My favorite books tend to be slow-burn, with a heavy dose of angst and a satisfying grovel. But sometimes I just want a light, sweet rom-com. Or a cute, closed-door holiday romance. Chances are, if you like it, I’ll like it too.

    I don’t have any triggers, per se, but I won’t touch anything with explicit non-con between the main characters. Almost anything else is fair game…when in doubt, feel free to shoot a note to jen@alaudaecreative.com.

  • I never run client work through an LLM or generative-AI based tool. If you wanted feedback from AI, you could do that yourself for free. (Although I don’t recommend it. AI doesn’t have feelings. It can’t tell you whether an emotional scene lands because it doesn’t have emotions. All it can do is identify patterns. More than likely, instead of helping, it’ll just erase your voice.)

    To further protect your work, I have optional AI features turned off in tools I use with clients, such as Honeybook, Google Docs, and MS Word.
